Good version of the Alexandre Dumas novel, with strong performances from the main characters. A young sailor (Jim Caviezel) is betrayed by a friend (Guy Pearce) as a traitor in Napoleonic France so that the friend can have his girl friend for himself. After many years in prison, he escapes and plans his revenge as the Count Of Monte Cristo, having acquired a fortune using an old treasure map.
