In 1950's New Zealand Kate Winslet and Melanie Lynsky are two school girls, whose intense friendship turns into a teenage love relationship. However their passion for stories leads them into a fantasy world that they construct. When their parents realise what is happening they try to separte them, but they kill Melanie Lynsky's mother. Peter Jackson does a good job in getting powerfull performances from the then unknown leads and as well as portraying their gradual disconection from reality as their lesbian relationship gets more intense. Their fantasy world is nicely brought to life by Peter Jackson as life sized clay models.
