Comment/Synopsis

Two very different brothers enlist in the Royal Flying Corps at the start of World War 1 and have traumatic experiences n both the war and their love life. Overall this is not a great film, but the highlight is the flying sequence towards the end of the film with the dog fights between the English and German airplanes. Howard Hughes started making this film as a silent film but then sound came along and he refilmed much of it in sound, so that it took 3 years to make and was massively expensive. Although popular at the box office it still lost money. Parts of the film still retain some of the legacy of the original silent design. One consequence of the change to sound was that Jean Harlow replaced Greta Nissen as the female lead, giving Harlow her first role in a major film and set her on the road to stardom. A couple of scenes are colour tinted including the only colour scene made by Jean Harlow.
