Matthew McConaughey is a treasure hunter looking for a lost American Civil war battleship full of treasure who goes to West Africa to find it. He goes inland up the river he meets Penelope Cruz who is a doctor trying to find the source of a plague. She hitches a ride up river and then they go their separate ways. Things get more complicated as politics and a civil war bring them back together as their separate investigations lead them in the same direction. Good, but formulaic, action / adventure film.
