Will Ferrell is a man who works for the IRS, whose boring life is turned upside down when he starts hearing a voice narrating his life. When he realises his life is the main character in a novel in which he dies at the end, he goes in search of help. Dustin Hoffman is the literary expert and Emma Thompson the writer, whilst Maggie Gyllenhaal is the love interest along the way. Will Ferrell gives a good performance, that is different from his usual slapstick roles and well supported by Maggie Gyllenhaal as the woman whose tax return he is investigating.
