Johnny Depp is found guilty of a crime he did not commit by Alan Rickman, who then rapes Depp's wife. She commits suicide and Alan Rickman becomes ward to his daughter. Fifteen years later Johnny Depp returns to exact revenge and strikes up a relationship with Helena Bonham Carter who runs a pie shop under his barbers shop. Tim Burton delivers a suitably dark and sinister version of Stephen Sondheim's musical, with some good touches of black humour. The cast may not be an obvious choice for a musical, but Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter give good performances, despite none of the songs being particularly memorable.
