Career / Biography

Groucho Marx was one of the great comedians of his time, known for his his one liners and a unique on screen presence. The brothers started off as a singing group but when that failed they started tellingjokes which led to their comic career. They developed their stage comedy routines and on stage Groucho Max developed his character along with their anarchic brand of humour. As they were popular on stage they were signed up by Paramount. His first films were based on their stage productions, but with Monkey Business this was the first not based on their stage work, though had the scene as they all impsorsonated Mauice Chavallier. Duck Soup was one of the highlights of his films. However they were not box office money spinners and so they moved across to MGM. His fist film with them was A Night At The Opera and arguably one of the best Marx brothers films. The state room sequence has become a classic scene. This was followed up with the equally suscessful A Day At The Races. With the Big Store they ended their work with MGM with not the best last two films. A Night In Casblance was made mainly to raise money to support CHicco Marx and was not a success as the film and comedy environment was changing. He then hosted a very popular radion quiz show. With Copacabana he embarked on a solo film career. Love Happy was the final film made by the brothers together which was more a vehicle for Harpo. In 1951 he featured in Double Dynamite alongside Jane Russell and Frank SInatra he plays a similar sorst of character but without his brothers to play off.
