Career / Biography

Al Pacino is an American actor who is best known for his role in the Godfather films. He was born in New York from parents from Sicily. He trained through the New York School Of Performing Arts and then The Actor's Studio. His early career was on the stage. His first film role was in 1969 in Me, Natalie. It was The Panic In Needle Park that brought attention to him. The turning point came when Francis Ford Coppola cast him in the the Godfather for which he was nominated as Best SUpporting Actor, though he thought it should be for Best Actor. This was followed by the influencial police corruption film Serpico. Some of his best films were directed by Sydney Lumet. For The Godfather Part II he had another Oscar nomination and was possibly one of his best performances. Dog Day Afternoon is an inept bank robbery and another Lumet film and Oscar nomination. Scarface was another influential film and a man being drawn into organised crime. It is his performance that makes the film. In the 1980's he returned to the theatre before returning to films with Warren Beatty's DIck Tracy in an over the top role. In 1990 Paramount persuaded people to make The Godfather: Part III. He followed this with the down to earth romantic comedy Frankie And Johnny. He finally won his Oscar for The Scent Of A Woman. In Heat he appeared opposite Robert DeNero. Donny BRasco was another corrupt cop expose film. His one Shakepearean role was in the Merchant Of Venice.
