Comment
An elderly widow discovers what appears to be a snuff film in her late husbands belongings. She hires private detective (Nicholas Cage) to investigate if it is real or not. He identifies the girl and meet her mother (Amy Morton) where he finds that she ran off to California. He goes to California where he works with a man who works in a porn store (Joaquin Phoenix) to discover who made the film. The film progressess from a missing persons case to the dark sided of the porn industry. Joel Schumacher has produced a good film that deal well with a difficult subject and has scenes of an unpleasant nature that some people will find disturbing, but it is done with good pace and suspense. Nicholas Cage struggles to get a balance between dispasionate detective and emotional family man as the film is indespersed with phone calls back to his wife (Catherine Keener). The small supporting roles from Amy Morton as the mother of a runaway child and Catherine Keener as the wife are the best performances in the film.
