A married woman organises a drinks party for a neighbouring couple and a woman whose teenage daughter is having a party in her house. The evening starts with the typical British reserve but the livens up as the alcohol flows and the bickering between the partners increases. This was part of the BBC's Play For Today series and is Mike Leigh's take on 1970's aspiring middle class. Alison Steadman's character Beverly has become a cult figure. If you are of that age you can empathise with her but are also embarrassed about what you are watching. This is all about the performance of Alison Steadman who captures the essence of her character so well.
