Comment/Synopsis

In pre-war Algiers a French jewel thief is holed up in the casaba, where he is safe from arrest by the local police. The French police arrive and try to entice him out of his safe haven, but it is the arrival of a beautiful woman who visits the casba that upsets the status quo much to the annoyance of his local girlfriend. Charles Boyer gives a good performance who starts as king of his castle but increasingly finds it a prison, particularly as his feelings for Hedy Lamarr who is free to come and go from the casba and return to their beloved France. Hedy Lamarr is alluring with an elegant beauty whilst Sigrid Gurie has a more earthy sensuality.
