A spy goes to another planet where emotions and love are banned and replaced with logic determined by a giant computer. There he falls in love and destryoys the computer with poetry. This is Jean-Luc Goddard's thought provoking piece of French New Wave film making. Although set in space it is filmed in actual Paris of the time so without fanciful science fiction type sets and costumes. THe film also has a feel of film-noir with the lead character a typical Sam Spade type, with coat and hat and mostly filmed in the dark. Running through the fairly slow paced narrative are the philosophical ideas of logic versus emotion, with people being executed for showing any emotion. Not a film that will appeal to all but a good example of the director's style.
