Comment/Synopsis Towards the end of the American civil war a Yankee soldier is taken in by by a Southern school mistress and her five girls and the inevitable sexual tensions arise. Despite being produced and directed by Sophia Copolla and having the acting talents of Nicole Kidman and Kirsten Dunst this misses the mark. Whilst soem shots are quite artistic, much just feels washed out or in the dark. Ther characters have become bland and much of the emotional and sexual tension is lost. The 1971 version directed by Don Siegel and featuring Clint Eastwood is much better and the version worth watching.
