Comment/Synopsis
Philip Marlowe (George Montgomery) is asked by a woman (Florence Bates) to find a stolen doubloon, but as he starts to investigate he keeps finding dead bodies whilst being attracted to the woman's secretary (Nancy Guild). This is a reasonable adaptation of of Chandler novel, but not a classic, mainly because George Montgomery is not the strongest version of the Philip Marlowe character. There is though a good performance from Nancy Guild as the femme fatal and good support from Florence Bates as the scheming matriarch. This is not the best example of film-noir.
