Comment
A young man (Richard Barthelmass) whose family works on the southern cotton plantations is torn between fighting for his family, their fellow workers and his childhood sweetheart (Dorothy Jordan) and the land owner (Berton CHurchill) who put him through school and then employs him as a book keeper and his daughter (Bette Davis) who has designs on him. The film highlights the social and economic inequalities of the time. Richard Barthelmass was better known for his silent roles but here gives a good performance as the idealistic young man. There is also a good early performance from Bette Davis as the rich socialite whose seduces the young man.
