A wealthy woman (Madeleine Carroll) in Cafe Society marries a newspaper man (Fred MacMurray) as bet to get back into the press but they soon realise it was a mistake. For the sake of her family name they are encouraged to be seen together but their opposite attitudes to life, each other and the socirty of the other one creates problems. Things are complicated by Fred MacMurray's long standing friendship with Shirley Ross. Whilst the end is predictable there are enjoyable trists and turns along the way. Madeleine Carroll is elegant in the lead in this first film pairing with Fred MacMurray. Not a great film but a pleasant rom-com from the period.
