Charlie Chan (Sidney Toler) is brought by the daughter (Joan Woodbury) of a man who was killed in a locked room with a secret door. This is a fairly typical Charlie Chan film, though Sidney Toler is not the best actor to play Charlie Chan. There is good support from Joan Woodbury and the comic foil of Mantan Moreland as the taxi driver helping them.
