A idealistic young doctor starts researching lung disease in the Welsh valley's, but when rejected moves to London and then ends up treating rich neurotic patients before re finding his original passion. The film was based on the novel by A J Cronin with its social comment on the social inequalities of health care in Britain. It also explores the the ideas of idealism and social responsibility against wealth and social climbing. Robert Donat rightly was Oscar nominated for his performance as the idealistic doctor loosing and then finding his passion. The film has a strong British cast except for Rosalind Russel who was American and kept her American accent. She was cast by MGM who were funding the film and despite the accent gives a good performance.
