A socially inept bank clerk (Terence Stamp) who collects butterfly's decides to collect a woman ((Samantha Eggar) to add to his collection, so kidnaps her and keeps her in a cellar he has prepared for her. This is a very good example of how to make a suspense/horror film by having a a good script, good characters, good performances and no effects or gore. This basically has two characters and and the whole film revolves around the interaction between the two of them. Your attention is kept by the plot and direction despite there only being a couple of sets, but they are well filmed to add to the atmosphere of the film. The film is based on the novel by John Fowles.
