A newspaper columnist helps a policeman make an arrest and then falls in love with him. They move to the LA suburbs where she discovers she has traded her career for being a stay at home wife for a man with little ambition. She starts to manipulative his career including undermining her husbands immediate superior and having an affair with the chief of police. However her final attempt to secure her husbands career leads to fatal consequences. The story has some weaknesses but it is carried by a strong performance from Barbara Stanwyck who manges to be scheming, manipulative and sexy all in a way that shows passion in an understated way.
