Comment
As parliament looses faith in Neville Chamberlain (Ronald Pickup) early in World War 2, Winston Churchill (Gary Oldman) becomes Prime Minister. Hitler has conquered most of Europe and Churchill wants Britian to stand and fight, but there are those in the cabinet who want to apease Hitler and make peace with him. This is a very good portrayal of Winston Churchill and the problems he faced during World War 2. It reflects both his political and his personal problems and how he dealt with them. Gary Oldman is convincing as Winston Churchill and his performance draws you into his character. There is good support from Kristin Scott Thomas as his wife and Lily James as the young woman who becomes his secretary. This is a well produced film that balances the political story with his personal life and struggles as shown with his relationship with his wife and his personality comes through with his working relationship with his secretary.
