A well known actor gets to play the role of Othello, but the charcter he is playing gradually takes over his off stage life. He plays opposite his ex-wife (Signe Hasso), with whom there is still some form of relationship whilst at the same time having an affair with a waitress (Shelly Winters). As he descends into madness, the murderous jealosy of his charcter leads to tragic consequnces. The film is all about the performance of Ronald Colman as the actor whose character takes him over and for which he won the Best Actor Oscar. Director George Cukor was also Oscar nominated for his work on the film.
