Comment/Synopsis

In medieval Italy a man has his wife taken by the local ruler and is left to bring up their child on his own. When the ruler takes his son as well, he joins the rebels and kidnaps the rulers niece to barter for his son. The plot is a variation on the Robin Hood theme and a piece of entertaining action, adventure and romance. Burt Lancaster is good as the loner who becomes the charismatic leader and Virginia Mayo as the high born lady attracted to the enigmatic rebel. Whilst this is not a classic film it did give Burt Lancaster a good lift in his early career and shows off his background as a circus performer before he became an actor. Enjoy a swashbuckling Burt Lancaster romancing an elegantly aloof Virginia Mayo.
