The rich patriach of an Argentinian family has two daughters. One marries a French man and one a German. When he dies they move back to the respective countries of their husbands. The son of the French father becomes a tango dancing playboy and is having an affair with a married woman. Just as her husband discovers the affair, the first world war breaks out and the two halves of the family find themselves fighting each other on opposite sides of the war. This is a visually impressive epic from the silent period. Although known for Rudolph Valentino's sultry tango early in the film, but the streength of the film is merging of sweeping vista's and the detail of the internal shots. Made shortly after the end of the war it includes much Bibliical imagery, not least linking the war to the events in Revelation and showing how different people were affected by and responded to the events of the war.
