In Victorian London a couple move into a house that has been empty ever since a woman was murdered for some rubies that were never found. The husband is looking for the rubies and is trying to send his wife mad to hide what she knows about him. This is a good British film version of the classic stage play with a very good performance from Diana Wynyard as the wife being subject to psychological tourture. This is as least as good as the 1944 Hollywood remake with Ingrid Bergman as it has better characterisations and well built tension. Based on the stage play by Patrick Hamilton.
