Comment
A young orphan is apprenticed to a blacksmith and then an annonymous benefactor takes him to London to make his a gentleman, all this against a backdrop of his unrequited love for a woman and her eccentric relative. Mike Newell has produced a good version of the Dickens story, with good production, visuals and suitably atmospheric lighting. It is also helped by the strong performances from the supporting cast, notably Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham-Carter and Robbie Coltrane. The film manages to tell the story and retains the Dickensian feel and view of London.
