Comment/Synopsis

Cary Grant, Douglas Fairbanks Jr and Victor McLaglen are three soldiers in India during the British rule. Sam Jaffe is Gunga Din who leads them to a golden temple where they are captured by people of the Thuggie cult and the British army is drawn into a trap trying rescue them. This is a curious film that is part action, part social comment and part comedy that is losely based on the poem by Rudyard Kipling and reflects a time of differing attitudes. It was made at a time when large scale films were made with hundereds of extra's, rather then filling in with CGI versions of actors, but also shows George Stevens skill to direct a big budget epic film.
