A man researching the hanging of a man he thinks was wrongly convicted of multiple murders, digs up a grave and finds the knife the man used in the murders. He himself starts killing people after transforming into a disfigured person. The film builds slowly until Boris Karloff starts changing, thinks he was the original killer and starts killing women. There is a good performance from Boris Karloff as both the sane and insane man.
