A 60 something woman (Sally Field) who works in the accounts department of what has become a trendy New York company has spent her life looking after her mother. After her mother dies she goes with a friend (Tyne Daly) to a self help talk and falls for a younger co-worker (Max Greenfield). Then with the help of a teenager (Isabella Acres) reinvents her self, joins a younger social set whilst having to deal with her family (Stephen Root and Wendi McLendon) and her compulsion to hoard things in her house. This film is centred around the great performance of Sally Field as Doris, who is a complex character. She is appealing as the woman finding herself after spending much of her life helping others, elicits sympathy as someone with mental health problems, but has her dark side as she creates a false persona and lies consistently to the man she claims to be in love with. Max Greenfield is inspired as the love interest, but there is good support from Tyne Daly as her friend, Elizabeth Reaser as the doctor trying to deal with her psychological problems and Isabella Acres as the teenager giving her dating advice and creating an internet profile.
