A man has an all consuming passion to be a concert violinist. Whilst training he meets another musician who falls in love with him, but he rejects her when he meets an enigmatic, rich, married, socialite, who become his benefactor, gets his career started and then becomes his lover. John Garfield play the single minded musician who is indifferent to relationships, but it is Joan Crawford who dominates the film. She plays a woman who is an another failed married, is escaping into drinking and being emotionally damage struggles to build a relationship with John Garfield. What also makes this film interesting is how film audiences have changed over the last 70 years. A large part of the film comprises classical music played by an orchestra and the acting goes on around the music.
