In the 17th century two witches are burned after being denounced by a local man. The female witch curses him and his family to having unhappy marriages. In the 1940's his descendent (Fredric March) is a politician about to get married (to Susan hayward) the day before election day when the witches return. The female witch (Veronica Lake) wants to continue to punish the descendent of her persecutor, by upsetting his wedding by making him fall in love with her.
However when she makes a potion to make him love her she ends up falling in love with him. This is one of the best romantic comedies of the 1940's with Veronica Lake having fun as the witch who takes over the body of a beautiful blonde and falls in the love with the man she wants to torment.
