An escaped prisoner arrives at the house of his former lover who is now married with a family. He wants to hide out for a day before heading for the docks and escaping the country. Whilst that is the plot line that the film sits on, on top of this are a whole range of sub-plots involving her family. These really are more of a study of life in the east end of London in the post war years. Michael Balcon has produced a stylish character study that is helped by a good performance from Googie Withers as the central character in the film. Googie Withers met John McCallum whilst filming this film and they married the next year.
