Private detective Philip Marlowe (Robert Montgomery) is asked by a woman (Audrey Totter) to find the missing wife of her boss, however the case becomes complicated and dangerous as people start being killed off. The plot has the usual complex twists of a Raymond Chandler novel featuring Philip Marlowe. This adaptation is unusual in that it is filmed from the point of view of Robert Montgomery, so the view sees the film through the eyes of the main character. Whilst this starts as a novel concept it does constrain the visuals of the scenes. The film is not helped by the very lacklustre acting that seems to have no emotion in it, possibly not helped by the narrow filed of view of the photography. This was Robert Montgomery's first film as a director.
