Comment/Synopsis
The wealthy heir of a brewery has spent a year in the jungle and is returning home on a boat. There he meets and falls in love with a woman who is actually part of a group of card sharps. When he finds out who she is, he dumps her and she vows revenge. This is a well written study on relationships and marriage. There is a very good performance from Barbara Stanwyck in the first half as the card shark who falls in love, and then in the second half as she pretends to be an English Lady and schemes to get her revenge. Henry Fonda is fine, as he mainly plays off against Stanwyck's character. The strength of the film though is the script from writer / director Preston Sturges. Henry Fonda has a lot of falls and pratt-falls in the film which he did all himself without a stunt double. This is his best screwball comedy / rom-com and one of the classic screwball comedies.
