A shy young man lives out his delusions of a girlfriend with a life size doll he found on the internet. The film follows how his family and the community deal with his mental health issues. Ryan Gosling gives a very good and sympathetic performance of a man living with his delusions. There are good supporting performances from Emily Mortimer as his supportive sister-in-law, Kelli Garner as the work colleague with a crush on him and Patricia Clarkson as the psychologist. If you look past the slightly strange concept of the film it is a good sympathetic approach to dealing with mental health.
