A policeman (Alfred Molina) is investigating a series of murders of prostitutes and meanwhile a couple (Hope Davis and Donal Logue) rent out a spare room to a mysterious stranger (Simon Baker) who they begin to suspect might be the killer but the police then start to suspect that Alfred Molina is the killer. The film manages to alternate well between the two strands of the plot with good performances from Alfred Molina as the police detective and Hope Davis as the mentally unstable wife. This is a remake of the earlier silent black and white version by Alfred Hitchcock and is more explicit in portrayal of sex and violence.
