A married American reporter and a Eurasian widowed doctor meet and fall in love in Hong Kong in 1949 against the background of the Chinese communist revolution. This is a love story story set against a background of race, family, culture and politics. Whilst this is a 1950's love story is deals with cross cultural issues that are still repeated. There is a good performance from Jennifer Jones as the woman torn between her love, her career, her family and her culture. The star of the film is the song of the film title that occurs repeatedly as a motif thoughout the film. Some modern citisim complains of a European playing an Asian lead, but as th was made in Hollywwod during the paranoind 1950's no other option was likely and Jennifer Jones gives a very good performance as the mixed race person dealing with the implications of her birth.
