In 19th century France a woman who dreams of social success and romance is married to country doctor and embarks on affairs and runs up dedts to fulfill her dreams. This version of the film is quite faithfull to the original book by Gustave Flaubert and develops the complex character of Emma Bovray. Jennifer Jones is very good in the lead role as she portrays all the emotions of the character. The highlight of the film is the ballroom scene which is wonderfully produced and directed. It is also helped visually by the range of stunning gowns worn by Jennifer Jones.
