A man is planning a quiet vacation with his wife but she organises a vacation in a delapidated beach house with extended family and all their different problems. This is a comedy of family dynamics with a couple of running jokes going through the film. The film stands on the performance of James Stewart as the bemused head of the house trying to understand his family and all their relationships and problems. Maureen O'Hara brings a pleasant charm as a mother and Lauri Peters gives good support as the teenager with angst. The screenplay was writtten by Nunnally Johnson and some of the hummour has stood the test of time well, whilst others have dated badly. This was Marie Wilson's final feature film. Herb Albert has a cameo as a trumpet player in a dance band.
