A wealthy American woman (Constance Bennett) marries a member of the British aristocracy only to find he is unfaithful to her on their wedding night. Despite never being seen with her husband she is accepted into high society. The film is centered around a weekend party at her house where her manipulative attitude to people and her affairs come to light. There is a good performance from Constance Bennett as the scheming woman enjoying the elegance of being part of society. There is good support from Violet Kemble Cooper as the older woman infatuated by a younger man using her for her money and Anita Louise as the younger sister caught between her American boyfriend and a British Lord. The play was written by W Somerset Maugham, as a satire on the Britiah idle rich at the end of World War 1.
