A man (Trevor Howard) looses his job in SIngapore for theft and after trying to commit suicide is taken by a former captain friend to a remoter trading post where the consequences of his action, his love for a native woman (Kerima) conspire against him as his life and mental state spiral out of control. Carol Reed delivered a film that explored the dark side of the nature of people.
