A producer (Zero Mostel) and his accountant (Gene Wilder) come up with a scheme to make money by overselling shares in a play that they think will be a guaranteed flop, only it is so tasteless it becomes a success. The film was written by Mel Brooks and was his directorial debut. it was controversial on its release due to the nature of the play it features, Spingtime for Hitler. After a mainly poor reception on its release, it has since become something of a cult film, not least due to the humour running through the film and the performances of Gene Wilder and Zero Mostel.
