Comment/Synopsis

An English woman (Myrna Loy) arrives in a remote Indian town with her husband (Nigel Bruce) where she meets an old flame (George Brent) with a reputation and is torn between him and a handsom Indian doctor (Tyrone Power). Meanwhile the daughter of one of the English families has designs on George Brent. All their lives are thrown into disarray when the rains come, an earthquake hits and a burst dam causing flooding and then plague breaks out. The film is all about the various relationships between the characters, the English at the end of the Empire, Indian's taking back control and with love intermingled. Myrna Loy carries the film, but there are good performances from Tyrone Power, Brenda Joyce and Maria Ouspenskaya as the Maharani.
