A woman (Catherine Deneuve) who works as a manicurist is developing an increasing aversion to men including her sister's boyfriend and a man who has takena fancy to her. When her sister (Yvonne Furneaux) leaves her alone in their flat she gradually descends in to hallucinations and madness which leads to tragic results those who try and help her. Roman Polanski's direction creates a claustrophobic tension as Catherine Deneuve becomes increasingly more mentally unstable.
