John Wayne returns from the civil war to the family ranch, but when it is attacked by Indians and his niece captured, he starts a quest of revenge to get her back. This is one of the best John Wayne westerns from director John Ford. John's Waynes character is enigmatic in that whilst his quest is about rescuing his relative, what is driving him is his hatred of the Indians. This is all set against John Ford's use of vast landscapes and horizons.
