A woman (Vanessa Redgrave) dying of cancer joins a local community choir despite the objection of her very grumpy husband (Terence Stamp). After the perky choir mistress (Gemma Arterton) enters them into a competition, the woman dies and her husband has to deal with his loss and negative attitude to life. The plot of the film is obvious but, the strengths of the film are the mixture of the comedy and the pathos, together with the acting from Terrance Stamp as the classic grumpy old man, Vanessa Redgrave as the dying wife and good support from Gemma Arterton as the choir leader and confidant and Christopher Ecclestone as the estranged son. This is a surprisingly good British film.
