Kirk Douglas is the eponymous Spartacus who leads a slave revolt in the Roman Empire. This is an epic with an ensemble cast of some of the best actors of the period but it is the performance of Peter Ustinov that gained the Oscar win for Best Supporting Actor.
Dalton Trumb wrote the screen play but he was black listed by the House Un-American committee, however Kirk Douglas insisted that he be listed in the credits of Spartacus as he was not listed in other films. The scene where people stand up and say I am Spartacus is a reflection on this issue.
