In the 1820's a young woman from a poor family marries an older wealthy man, starts an affair with his son and persuades him to kill off his father. She then rejects the son and starts an affair with the companies top employee who is going out with her best friend. There is a good performance from Hedy Lamarr as a sort of femme fatale character but who also deals with a range of moral ambiguities as she deals with and manipulates other people for her own ends.
