Comment/Synopsis
A woman (Norma Shearer) has two suitors. She marries one only to find that madness is hereditary in his family so she cannot have children with him, but does have a child through an affair with her doctor (Clark Gable) but they do not tell the husband or the son who the real father is. This is an unusual film in that all the thoughts of the characters are out as voice overs, that mixes in with the actual dialogue. This leads to this beinng more of an emotional and philosophical film rather than one with much action. Norma Shearer is fine as the main character with good support from Clark Gable as the real father, Though Alexander Kirkland and are less convincing as the husband and the unrequited love. The film is based on the 9 act Eugene O'Neill play with the internal thoughts of the actor being said as the action on stage stopped. Much of the original play was cut for the film version.
