A married farmer starts an affair with a woman from the city who persuades him to drown his wife and go to the city with her, but at the last minute he cahnges his mind. He and his wife go into the city where they rekindle their love during a day and a night, but get caught in a storm on the lake on the way home that threatens their lives. This is F W Marnau's silent masterpiece that is beautifully filmed in a way that is creative and evocative that was made at the end of the silent era of films. Janet Gaynor gives an excellent performance for which she won an Oscar.
